Sweet 16: Prognostificationism

by clOUd none

March. The 3rd month of the year. Usually regarded as the time of year that goes out like a lion.  More heavily regarded as the most glorious 31 days red-blooded American males ages 2-76 could ask for. March is when dreams are made, and colleges’ existences justified. You think Davidson would still be a viable institution if it weren’t for Stephen Curry taking the 10 seed and single-handedly shoving it where the sun doth not shine? I think not.

Already 23 days through the month of Madness, and we have our Sweet 16.  What started as the Sizzling 64.5 (Sorry Morehead State, just not that impressed) has now dwindled past the Thrilling 32 and right on into respectability. The teams that are left are the best of the best of the best of the best, the schools that are now considering adding Bracketology as a major, the greatest athletic and scholarshiply institutions in our world today. This tournament is like sex, only better, because we don’t feel bad for watching for 3 weeks straight.

Here’s my take on the Sweet 16 matchups (I’ll try to be short and sweet):

UConn vs. Purdue

UConn, you have 3 dudes that are 11 feet tall, and your point guard wears a size 37 shoe.  If you blow this, you’ll not only be losing against a Big 10 team (lolbigten), but you’ll probably lose me 50 bucks.

Missouri vs. Memphis

I think Missouri’s overrated, but most of that is just residual of Chase Daniel. Mizzwho, here’s your chance to prove me wrong.

UNC vs. Gonzaga

The Zags’ best chance in this game is the refs not seeing Roy Williams or the entire UNC team trying to call a timeout. (Sorry Western Kentucky, but I picked Gonzaga so I can’t rally your cause any further)

Syracuse vs. Oklahoma

Here’s a classic case of who I want to win versus who I think will win.  Let us pray. Dear Lord, please make Blake Griffin immune to physical stress and pain for just one game.

Villanova vs. Duke

I like Nova, but then again, it’s Duke.

Pittsburgh vs. Xavier

Xavier has the chance to practically hand me 50 dollars.  Go Xavier.

Mich St vs. Kansas

Big 12 vs. Big 10. I like Kansas by 10.

Louisville vs. Arizona

Arizona has run its course in terms of doing my bracket good. Louisville by double digits.

All in all, look for a great weekend of basketball.

Oh, and Boomer Sooner.

It’s March Madness time!

by aMAIZEing

Well it still isn’t even April yet, but thanks to Coach John Beilein I actually care about college basketball again! In light of that, clOUd none decided to prey on my emotions (probably try to re-coup money he lost in the BCS Nat’l “Championship” game) and asked me to go against him in a bracket challenge. Of course I accepted.

My Final Four is Louisville, Memphis, Pitt and NC with Pitt beating Memphis in the finals. He has Michigan State, UCONN, Pitt and NC in the Final Four with NC beating UCONN in the championship. Wish us luck (well wish me luck)!

Seriously, is it August yet?!

by aMAIZEing

Ok so the day started off pretty calm. We got our solid commits to sign their LOI, but it seemed like nothing amazing was going to happen. To be honest, I was hitting refresh on a couple different Rivals pages — the main michigan.rivals.com page, the LOI checklist page, and the 2009 commit list. I didn’t want to miss ANYTHING. I updated my Facebook status a few times and chatted with a few fellow fans. I even wrote the day off as uneventful at one point. Luckily, I was wrong.

Is it August yet? The Prequel!

by aMAIZEing

As I watched the end of Super Bowl XLIII, I had many things to be emo about.  Part of it was knowing (and then seeing) an ex-Buckeye was about to be the Super Bowl MVP, but mostly it was realizing it was only the beginning of February and football is pretty much over. Ya there’s the Pro Bowl (does anyone really watch this?) and the NFL draft, but I guess I’m looking forward to Signing Day more than anything — it’s tomorrow Feb 4th.

Today, Michigan fans got an early present. Quinton Washington (four star guard out of South Carolina) selected Michigan over his hometown Gamecocks.

I’m sure there will be more surprises tomorrow. Stay tuned to see what level of emo I reach as tomorrow progresses.

A Time to be Emo

by Vandy

Better late than never, right? With college football over and both of my teams in the NFL out of the playoffs, I’ve had a sports hang over for the past couple weeks, so I haven’t gotten around to writing my first article for emosports. By the way Charlie, great job on the site -it looks awesome and has a lot of potential.

First, allow me to introduce myself. I will be the first to admit that in the grand scheme of being a sports fan, I have little to be emo about. I am from San Antonio, Texas and I became a fan of every team I naturally should have been a fan of when I was growing up. In the NBA I love my Spurs, in the NFL I grew up a Dallas Cowboy and Houston Oiler fan, in baseball (my favorite sport growing up) my favorite team is the Houston Astros with a strong secondary in the Texas Rangers, in the NHL I like the Dallas Stars when I care about hockey, and in college I like Texas and Vanderbilt (my alma mater).I’d say I first really started liking sports in the early 90s. Since then I have seen a Cowboys dynasty in the mid 90s, seen the Spurs win championships four out of nine years and become the team of the decade, seen the Spurs and Stars win titles in the same year (1999), and witnessed one of the most amazing college football seasons end with an amazing game which clinched the title for my favorite team (Texas in 2005).I’m big on championships in sports and my teams have delivered several to me. Sure, there have been a lot of disappointments, but a fan of any team will go through ups and downs. At this point I almost feel as if I’m playing with house money, especially when I think I could have grown up in such tortured sports cities as Philadelphia, Cleveland, Buffalo, or Seattle. I shudder to even try to imagine what it would be like to suffer through the misery of those places. No championships recently other than the Phillies last season and the weather is freezing and always dreary (or rainy in Seattle’s case) plus some truly heartbreaking moments for those cities over the years. Not that I care, just saying sucks to be them. Continue reading

Lions and Tigers and.. Wolverines? Oh my!

by aMAIZEing

There are all kinds of fans when it comes to sports — and I just happen to put the ‘fan’ in fanatic. I was born in Trenton, Michigan back in 1981 and it seems I was destined to have an unrivaled passion for all things Detroit (and, well, the Michigan Wolverines). My first memory as a kid was the 1983 Rose Bowl. That’s right, the 1983 Rose Bowl — I would later know Michigan ended up losing to UCLA that day. I would also have to carry this and many other burdens as my family moved to where I currently reside — Nashville, TN.

What does this all mean? Basically, 2008 was a very emo year for me (the oranges brought me through some dark times!). Michigan had a new and exciting coach that was supposed to turn our program around. The Tigers pulled a classic Yankees move and brought out the checkbook in an attempt to buy a World Series. The Lions were coming off a 7-9 season (that started 6-2, but who’s counting) with high expectations. (SIDEBAR — on top of it all, I have to deal with the typical SEC homer and bandwagon Tennessee Titans fan every day, but I digress…) I don’t think I have enough tissue at my desk to go into each one in this article, so let’s focus on the most depressing.

The 2008 Detroit Lions. Bow your heads for a moment of silence.

5 Reasons Tim Tebow Is Better Than Everyone Else On The Planet

by clOUd none

5). He has as many career all-around yards as the number of third-world children he has personally vaccinated against all known diseases on the planet.

4). He would die for our sins in a heartbeat if it were physically possible for him to die.

3). I found it emotionally, mentally, and physically impossible to root against him, and I am an OU fan.  We root against babies.

2). He celebrates his birthday on December 25th, and his resurrection is celebrated in late March/early April.

1). He doesn’t go to the University of Texas.
